Preparing your artwork for printing - help and guidance
When transitioning your artwork from canvas to product, proper preparation is key to ensuring your designs look as stunning in print as they do in your studio.   At Creative Forge, we’re here to guide you through the technical steps of preparing your art for printing, ensuring that the final product lives up to your creative vision.

Why Proper Preparation Matters

Printing isn’t as straightforward as uploading an image. Issues like low resolution, incorrect file formats, or poor colour matching can lead to disappointing results. A little preparation can save you time, money, and frustration!

Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing Artwork for Printing

Step 1: Digitise Your Artwork

For traditional artists, digitising your work is the first step. Use a high-quality scanner or camera to capture every detail. For larger pieces, consider professional scanning services.  If you do not have a scanner then we can scan your artwork for you here at Creative Forge.

Step 2: Choose the Right File Format

Preferred Formats: PNG or TIFF for transparent backgrounds; PDF or JPEG for full-colour images.

Resolution: Ensure a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch) for crisp, clear prints at the size you wish to print.  If you want to learn more about resolution and dimensions you can read a previous blog of ours here explaining it all.

Step 3: Remove Backgrounds

When printing your artwork onto a product, any background included in your scan—such as paper texture, shadows, or unintended marks—will appear on the final item.  Often artists do not know it is there but please be assured a printer will pick it up and it will be transferred onto your products which you obviously don’t want!  We check images and remove backgrounds every day for artists before printing their products.  Often customers think a background has been removed but it is still there and not visible until you turn the brightness down on an image.  This is a simple and effective way to see if your artwork has a background.

PREPARING YOUR ARTWORK

If you want to remove backgrounds yourself, tools like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or Canva can help remove unwanted backgrounds so worth doing to increase the presentation of your finished product.  Here are some images to show you how different a result is when you remove the background of unwanted noise.

 Step 4: Test Your Design

Preview your artwork on a template of the chosen product. We offer product mocks and creative design advice here, however, if  you use a different print on demand service see if they offer mock up tools for this purpose. It is a great way to visualise your product (plus of course you can use mocks to test interest before even having a product printed!).

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Low-Quality Images: Blurry or pixelated artwork won’t translate well onto products.
  • Overcomplicated Designs: Simple, bold designs often work best, especially on smaller items.
  • Ignoring Margins: Allow for bleed areas to avoid cutting off important details during printing.
